  • Wendell told me I should post on his xanga site for him, and being the submissive wife that I am, I obeyed his commands. Anyway, I just posted on my site, so if you want to see any wedding pictures, you can hop over there. If you don't want to see wedding pictures, I'm sorry.

Since his last post, Wendell has transferred from Regent University to Ohio State.  We found this out the day before our wedding.  We had a wonderful honeymoon in Naples, Florida. The days after our honeymoon were a huge conglomeration of moving all my stuff to Ohio, another reception, searching for an apartment, finding an apartment, and moving all of our stuffs into the apartment. In between all of that, Wendell has been trying to study for the Patent Bar and get ready for another year of law school. He's busy.

Now you know a little bit of what's going on in his life.

By the way, he loves those smilies; that's why there are so many of them.

  • dog days of summer

I love hot weather. Except when I am stuck in a car in business attire with no air conditioning. Last weekend we had record setting hot temperatures here in Va. Beach...each day approaching or exceeding 100. So I promptly recharged my AC, and now that the hot weather is gone (it's still warm, but not hot), my AC works wonderfully.

Funny how that works. It can work the other way too--positive momentum is awesome! Today the US Patent and Trademark Office gave me the go ahead to take the Patent Bar. So I have until Sept. 15 to study for it and take it. If I pass, I will be registered patent agent. Then I found out that I was accepted to be on the Negotiations Board. I also (finally) found out my class rank and GPA. And that some car insurance questions I had would not require any more work--Bethany must have sweet talked someone on the phone or something. :)

Thanks God. Although I would have liked to known sooner, it was perfect timing. I was busy writing a law review article until last weekend, and so this week was the first week that I had some extra time (the court only keeps me busy part time).

On that subject, it was interesting to see the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) decide that the enemy combatant detainees in Guantanamo Bay are able to appeal to our civil courts while our own citizen-patriots are forced to live with the military court decisions. Read: our own military (citizens) gets less rights than alien enemies in this case. While I do agree that the US government shouldn't be able to detain them indefinitely without charging them, that does not require SCOTUS to circumvent military tribunals all together in the appeals process. Although the US did not treat the detainees as "prisoners of war" for legal purposes, they are in practice, and thus should be able to be detained sufficiently to ensure they will not help the enemy. Ok, my rant is done.

Here's to wishing for more positive momentum for everybody.

Battle for the Mind: A Physiology of Conversion and Brainwashing
    By William Sargant

Why our country needs significant Muslim influence

To start with, some interesting supporting info about religious and political conversion (garnered largely from Battle for the Mind by William Sargant)

    1.  People who find a way to avoid dealing with a problem issue are the hardest to convert (or brainwash) because their emotional balance is maintained.  POWs that act indifferently or with detached amusement last the longest when subjected to high stress/torture.  When emotions (anger or fear esp.) get involved, "suggestability" (susceptibility to persuasion) is raised.

    2.  More specifically, indifference and detached amusement are great defenses to conversion.  Sometimes it's better to avoid a fight and continue standard operating procedure than to get engaged in a debate, because at that point there is much greater tendency to be converted against your will.  Phlegmatic temperaments with happy, well-adjusted outlooks are the most naturally resistant to conversion.

    3.  To stand under the highest pressure, including physical pain, the indifference to a false idea (e.g. Islam) must be coupled with an obsessive, driving belief in a creed or way of life (e.g. Christianity).

Why the US would be better off with a much larger Muslim population

Any difference in what we do and what we say we believe will cause stress and potentially impaired judgment.  The West holds Christianity as its religion.  However, because many of us do not act as Christians, we end up with impaired judgment on a variety of matters.

So the question becomes how can any Posers be truly converted in a way that changes lifestyle and action to be consistent with Christian beliefs?

Answer: Overwhelming emotion.  If there were significant Muslim influence restricting our rights or persecuting us, 1) Christ's sacrifice and the context in which the NT was given would become real to our minds, and 2) we would really understand "Fear God" and "love thy neighbor as thyself."

Those beliefs on a large scale would begin to have genuine viability both socially and politically, which would in turn make it unnecessary for us to think of our Christianity as separate from our identity at work or elsewhere.  A unified, invigorated, and truly Christian body is worth the potential pain.

The battle is against indifference and apathy.  May I resist apathy daily in pursuit of a passionate, driving belief in Christ.
